$20,000 Savings by Merging 14 Streams on Dimensional Mailing
Though Dimensional Addressed Admail offers significant savings over parcel rates, there is quite a difference in these rates at the various sort levels. Consider the following rates for the Dimensional Addressed Admail – Medium Category:

On one Dimensional Addressed Admail project of 70,000 pieces, demographic splits resulted in fourteen similar, yet subtly different, streams. We had the choice of preparing each stream as a separate mailing, if we wished. To determine the best course of action, we decided to run fourteen separate sorts and then compare the total cost against the cost of a consolidated sort. The results were astounding. By combining all the streams into one mailing, we saved the client over $20,000 in postage.
Case Notes:
CN.1. We recognized that it would be a challenge to merge the fourteen streams, due to the bulkiness of the piece. Therefore, we analyzed the workflow options and reorganized a section of our plant to set up assembly stations for each of the streams. As the addressing was completed for each stream, the addressed pieces, the stream-related coupons and product samples were moved to the appropriate stations.
CN.2. We knew that we had to break component tasks down so that different groups were responsible for a) the assembly and sealing and b) the gathering and assembling of bundles and the final containerization. To accomplish this we introduced a new task, that we referred to as sweeping. The stations were set up in a U format. As pieces were assembled and sealed, they were set on the front of the tables. The sweepers would then go around and gather up the various pieces for the bundles and deliver completed bundles to the group responsible for bundling and containerization. This way, we were able to do the merge concurrently, saving the client money in preparation time, in addition to the $20,000 postage savings.
CN.3. It should be noted that much of the analysis work we do is included as part of the overall project. However, analysis and plant restructuring of the extent noted above is usually subject to modest consulting fees. These fees however, are easily justified, given the sizable savings that typically result from such efforts.
